Case Study 5
Legacy collection of 19th/20th century works by predominately NY State artists, both well known and little known. Over 300 works including those by Alexander Archipenko, Ernest Lawson, Jerome Myers, Leon Kroll, Guy Du Bois, Fairfield Porter, Milton Avery, Elie Nadelman, Fletcher Martin, George Ault, Hawley Lever, Charles Gruppe, William Zorach, and Konrad Cramer. The collector’s objective is to donate his collection to a single museum to preserve it in its entirety in perpetuity.
Step 1: Client Objective
This is a legacy study collection of more that 300 paintings by 19th and 20th century American artists from New York State. Collector wishes to donate the collection for study where it will be used to educate, lend and exhibit. Many of the artists are little known names today which makes it especially useful as a study collection.
Step 2: Problem
The collection has been kept under good storage conditions and partially collection has partially inventoried. Inventorying needs to be completed.
Step 3: Solution
Collector and done museum to meet annually on a designated date to review storage conditions and inventorying progress.
Step 4: Results
Collection donated in its entirety to the New York State Museum, America’s first and largest state museum.
Step 5: ArtNarrative
The collection is unique in that it has a wide range of paintings by New York State artists from the 1800s and 1900s, many well known in American art history such as Alexander Archipenko, Ernest Lawson, Jerome Myers, Leon Kroll, Guy Du Bois, Fairfield Porter, Milton Avery, Elie Nadelman, Fletcher Martin, George Ault, Hawley Lever, Charles Gruppe, William Zorach, and Konrad Cramer, while others have faded into obscurity with the passing of time. This makes it a strong study collection. The entire collection was placed with the New York State Museum, America’s oldest and largest public museum.
